Dear Belgium Bears and supporters,
Come join us and discover one of the most famous battles in history!
On Sunday, March 15, we will relive the Battle of Waterloo through an immersive experience.
The 1815 Memorial offers a sensory experience in a narrative scenography with various special effects and immersive decors. We recommend bringing headphones and a fully charged smartphone to use the museum’s visitor app.
The Lion of Waterloo itself is a monument erected in 1826 at the request of William I, King of the Netherlands, on the presumed spot where his eldest son, the Prince of Orange, was wounded on June 18, 1815. At the very top, a colossal lion, the Leo Belgicus, or Belgian Lion, symbolizes victory. Its weight and dimensions are impressive: 28 tons for a length of 4.5 meters and a height of 4.45 meters from head to toe. The hill on which it stands is visible for miles, its 41-meter height and 169-meter diameter making it one of the most impressive monuments in the world. At its center, a brick column supports the lion’s weight. Facing France, the lion rests its paw on a globe, heralding the return of European peace.
After climbing the 226 steps, the enthusiast can survey the entire battlefield. An orientation table and various other information provide a clear picture of troop movements.
The Panorama is a large, round building designed for a canvas painted by Louis Dumoulin in 1912. Its impressive dimensions—360°, a circumference of 110 meters, and a height of 12 meters—and special sound effects immerse visitors in the heart of the battle.
Finally, the HOUGOUMONT farm is a historic farm, the last authentic witness to the battle of June 18, 1815. A surprising multimedia installation tells the story of the “battle within the battle”: a spectacle that perfectly combines respect for the past and innovation.
Afterwards, we’ll enjoy a local beer or other drink with the option of dining nearby. Price per person: €25, drink included. Meet at 2 p.m. at the Memorial entrance, parking: Route du Lion 1815, 1420 Braine l’Alleud.
Please indicate in the comments section if you’d like to join us for dinner afterwards to make our reservation!
We look forward to meet you again, kind regards,
The Belgium Bear Committee
